Monster Energy Graves Yamaha rider continues dominance in AMA Superbike series with weekend sweep for fifth consecutive win; Blake Young second, Josh Herrin third
LEEDS, AL, JUNE 24 â Monster Energy Graves Yamahaâs Josh Hayes continued his assault on the record books by sweeping both legs of the AMA Superbike double-header in the Triumph Superbike Classic with a race win on a sweltering hot Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park.
Unlike on Saturday, when he was challenged by his young teammate Josh Herrin for much of the race, today Hayes had the track to himself. Herrin made a few costly mistakes that sent him off the track more than once and gave Hayes early breathing room.
Having crashed on a hot, greasy Barber track in morning warm-up, Hayes made a point of hitting his marks and avoiding the track sealer and other irregularities that can catch a superbike rider out at the scenic track east of Birmingham on a day of 90-plus temperatures during the AMA races on Sunday.
Riding his own race, he put up a lead of over seven seconds on the 18th of 21 laps before backing off to win by 4.988 seconds.
The win on Sunday at Barber was his fifth in a row, and eighth this seasonâa new career highâand 25th in the class. That puts him closer to Ben Spies, whose 28 wins are third all-time. And itâs only seven behind Miguel Duhamelâs 32. Duhamel is a ways off, but Hayes could claim the single season Superbike wins record if he keeps up his pace. The record of 12 was set by all-time AMA Superbike wins leader Mat Mladin in the 19-race 2007 season.
Asked if that record was attainable, Hayes said, âI donât know. Attainable, yes. I think every track that we go to I think we can be competitive at. But I think itâs a pretty big ask.
